Semester 6, Jacobs

Summary of what JEM has brought to us in the past 3 years

Funding for face-2-face meetings (like the MathML F2F in Mandelieu) was very important in order to discuss and verify our proposed extension for the context-aware rendering of mathematical notation, one of the core research interest of the JACU group.

Participations at OpenMath Workshops, Conferences on Mathematical Education, and Mathematical Knowledge Management have been very valuable. Many contacts (for ongoing research projects and potential collaborations) have been established. Discussions and exchange with researchers as well as mathematical practitioners were necessary to evaluate our research solutions and reflect on further problems. Discussions with practitioners even proved helpful when our systems did not suit their use cases. In such cases, we still got valuable feedback on how we should evolve our systems to attract further potential users.

Moreover, JEM gave the JACU group the opportunity to form their own special interest group on “Scientific Communities of Practice” (SCooP) and to host a SCooP workshop in 2007 and 2008. This allowed for establishing closer contacts with researchers doing similar work in the wider field of mathematical practice – including, e.g., adaptation of documents, personalized educational websites, and collaborative authoring.
