You Can’t Fatten A Hog by Weighing It – Or Can You? Evaluating an Assessment for Learning System Called ACED
The purpose of the study that I'll describe at JEM was to evaluate the efficacy of an assessment for learning system named ACED (Adaptive Content with Evidence-based Diagnosis). We used an evidence centered design approach (Mislevy, Steinberg, & Almond, 2003) to create an adaptive, diagnostic assessment system in relation to the pre-Algebra topic of "sequences" (e.g., geometric and arithmetic sequences). ACED includes five main models: competency, evidence, task, presentation, and assembly (Shute, Graf, & Hansen, 2005).

New features in "physik multimedial"
This fall, we are introducing two new features of the elearning platform "physik multimedial".
http://www.physik-multimedial.de
First, this is LiLi 2.0, a totally new version of LiLi, our catalogue and search engine of physic's learning material.
LiLi provides links with descriptions, comments and ratings of learning material on the web.
Everyone may search, comment, insert or rate the links.
We have checked and updated every link and description in our database and enhanced the handling of our service.

WIRIS Quizzes, enhancing Moodle quizz system with mathematical capabilities
For some time WIRIS suite has offered tools to support education in mathematics and science topics in Moodle, the Open Source LMS. So far these solutions offered a formula editor based on icons and pallets, plus a powerful platform for mathematical calculation called WIRIS CAS. We want to present the new WIRIS family member, called Quizzes, that integrates the powerful WIRIS mathematical calculation engine of with Moodle quizzes system.

Should we still teach kids to multiply and to divide?
The number of students studying sciences in Europe has steadily declined to such an extent that this is seen as a threat to the competitiveness of Europe. In France the decline has been about 5% each year during the past several years. Inquiry Based Study, IBS, is the paradigm that is generally seen as a possible way to increase students’ interest in sciences.

Producing scientific documents accessible to blind and visually impaired people
Blind and visually impaired people usually cope with several challenges in accessing scientific educational resources. That prevents many of them from undertaking scientific courses. At present there exist best practices which can be employed to produce digital scientific documents accessible to blind and visually impaired people.

A Mathematical Approach to Ontology Authoring and Documentation
As the semantic web ontology languages RDFS and OWL are limited in
both their expressivity and their support for modularity and documentation,
we propose the mathematical markup language OMDoc as an alternative.
We show how OMDoc can be made compatible with semantic web ontology
languages, focusing on knowledge representation, modular design, documentation, and metadata. We evaluate our technology by re-implementing the
FOAF ontology and applying it in a novel metadata framework for technical
documents (including ontologies).

MathDox Workshop
The MathDox format is an XML based language for interactive mathematical documents. MathDox documents can be transformed into web pages by the MathDox Player. These web pages are dynamic and interactive, support rendering of mathematics, offer easy access to computer algebra systems, and are equipped with a convenient mathematical input system making it for the user possible to create mathematical input in the semantically rich OpenMath language.

Tutorial on the translation of mathematical content in GF
The tutorial gives an introduction to GF, Grammatical Framework, which is used in WebALT for the translation of mathematical exercises to seven languages. Aimed for beginners not knowing GF but having some background in programming and mathematics, the tutorial has the goals of enabling the participants to
- write simple applications in GF
- use the resource grammar libraries of GF
- extend the WebALT translator to new mathematics concepts
- understand the potentials and limitations of GF-based translation

The Digital Mathematics Environment
Many students at secondary school level and beyond have difficulties in mastering algebraic skills. Often the algebraic manipulations are carried out in a superficial way, using rules that are not meaningfully connected with the underlying concepts. To help secondary school students to develop real algebraic understanding (insights and concepts) and to learn and practice algebraic skills in sense-making ways, designers of the Freudenthal Institute have developed several sequences of programs, Java applets, that

Java Simulation Laboratories in Mathematics e-Learning
Our aim is to design and build several simulations in the EJS (Easy Java Simulation) environement. With such simultions the student is able to observe mathematical objects and properties that are important for their academic formation.
